Summer is almost over and winter is just around the corner. To be honest I don’t like the cold but I do find the cooler months are much kinder for those of us who suffer hot flushes. If there is one thing I love about winter, it’s the fashion. So finding new additions to your Winter wardrobe can be very exciting.
Scarves, coats, boots and chunky knits are all on my list. This winter we will see a lot more colour which is so refreshing as compared to previous winters of black, grey and more grey! In saying that these are great neutral colours for a base to add to any outfit. I’ve put together 5 items you need in your 2018 Winter wardrobe.
Colour
A colour you will certainly be seeing is red! Coats, blazers, shoes, boots, bags and sunglasses, so easy to add these accessories to a boring black outfit. Red is a power colour and a great confidence booster, so if you have a public speaking engagement and need that extra edge, try it out.
Of course, there are so many variances in the shade of red and choosing the right colour for you will depend on your skin tone. The basic rule is cooler skin tones go for Cherry, Raspberry and warm skin tones go for the more orange undertones such as Scarlet, if you know your red in a lipstick then you can choose the right red in clothing. Find your perfect shade of red
But if the red isn’t near your face then it doesn’t really matter what shade it is.
Plaid, houndstooth and tartan are monochrome prints in a classic form, so chic, especially when you add a pop of red to it. A blazer or coat in this print takes the power jacket to another level. But if your not the corporate type wear a plaid blazer with your denim jeans for a smart casual look. You will also be seeing tailored trousers and suiting in this print, how much is too much? Never enough for me, it’s one of my most favourite Winter wardrobe looks.

WARDROBE STAPLE
Denim, of course, is going nowhere, it’s part of our culture, the important thing here is to get comfortable. It’s a deal breaker jeans must be mid-rise or high waisted to hold that tummy firm and with elastane for the stretch factor. You’ll be seeing wider leg denim this year which is fantastic news for the girls with bigger calves. Also, your go-to denim jacket must have enough stretch to give you the comfort you need to carry out your daily tasks. Denim jackets are so versatile worn with anything from double denim to a floral maxi dress. It’s all about how you put it together. I know mine spends a lot of time in the car, just in case the weather turns cooler and I need to throw it on.
Denim has improved so much since the 70’s, yes they were high waisted, but they were so uncomfortable. I remember mine being so tight I had to lay on my back to zip them up.

Hats
Another great Winter wardrobe addition is a hat. Be it a beanie, beret or a retro style cap your head will be warm this winter, oh and a great way to hide unwashed hair as you didn’t have time that morning for the wash and blow-dry. Also worn with a pair of sunglasses so you can nick down to the corner store incognito.
Big Earrings
Yes, big earrings are still trending, in all shapes and textures, real statement pieces and most importantly so lightweight you don’t even know you are wearing them. At the recent Fashion Exposed and Australian Gift & Homewares in Sydney we found lots of jewellery suppliers bringing back gold finishes. This is great news as it fits perfectly into this winters wardrobe of earthy tones.
Remember that style has no age limit, you may just need to tweak it a little to suit you. Style should also be effortless, after all, who has the time to dedicate hours to an outfit choice.
You possibly already have some of these winter essentials in your wardrobe and like many of us don’t even know they are there…..If not, then perhaps you may want to head to your local boutique or online store to see what’s there waiting for you.
